After the failed last-chance talks and a series of warning strikes, workers walked off the production lines. Not only a PLN 1,000 wage increase, but—as the workers themselves state—the restoration of their dignity is also at stake.
The patience of the car giant’s employees has run out. On November 20, an indefinite general strike began at the Valeo factories in Chrzanów, Trzebinia, and Myślowice, Poland. After the failed last-chance talks and a series of warning strikes, workers walked off the production lines. Not only a PLN 1,000 wage increase, but—as the workers themselves state—the restoration of their dignity is also at stake.
“Respect starts with wages”
At 6:00 sharp, whistles and sirens sounded at the gates of the Valeo Lighting Systems factory in Chrzanów, replacing the usual roar of machinery. Hundreds of workers, dressed in union vests, refused to go to work and gathered at the entrance with banners. The slogans were clear: “Enough with exploitation,” “We are humans, not robots,” and crucially, “Respect starts with wages.”
The direct cause of the escalation of the conflict is the lack of a wage agreement with the company’s management. The union coordinating the action, WZZ “Sierpień 80,” is demanding:
• A basic wage increase of 1,000 PLN (€236) gross for each employee;
• An increase in the four-shift bonus (from the current 280 PLN or €66 to 600 PLN or €141);
• The introduction of a seniority bonus and improved social conditions.
Workers’ reports show that many of their wages are around the minimum wage, despite their years of experience and the difficult working conditions.
“People faint from the heat near the machines, and we have to beg for a break. We are monitored at every step; even when we go to the toilet, we are timed. This is a labor camp, not a modern factory,” one of the protesting workers reported.
From warning to paralysis
The road to a general strike was long. In mid-November (12-14 November), warning strikes took place at the factories—a two-hour standstill per shift. These were intended as a “yellow card” for the factory management. However, the negotiations failed to achieve a breakthrough. Valeo management deemed the demands unattainable in their current form, citing the difficult situation in the automotive industry.
De beslissing over de algemene staking viel na een referendum waarin, volgens de vakbondsleden, meer dan 90% van de werknemers stemde voor deze radicale manier van protest. De actie betrof niet alleen de grootste fabriek in Chrzanów (productie van verlichtingssystemen), maar verspreidde zich ook naar afdelingen in Trzebinia en Mysłowice. Zo dreigde de toeleveringsketen van de grootste automerken van Europa verstoord te raken.
Standpunt van het bedrijf: “Onverantwoordelijk in een tijd van crisis”
Het bestuur van Valeo benadrukt in een verklaring dat het het recht op staken respecteert, maar noemt de staking “onverantwoordelijk”.
“Het bestuur rekent erop dat het ons kan uitzitten, dat we uit geldnood het werk weer opnemen. Maar wij hebben niets meer te verliezen, want van onze huidige lonen kunnen we toch niet overleven”, stelt Katarzyna Jamróz, de leider van het protest.
Als het bestuur niet naar de onderhandelingstafel terugkeert met een nieuw voorstel, zou de staking in Chrzanów wel eens kunnen uitgroeien tot een van de grootste arbeidersprotesten in 2025 in de Poolse industrie.
De werknemers van Valeo vertrekken volgende week dinsdag (25 november) naar het hoofdkantoor in Frankrijk.
